Which version of Tableau should I download/use?

Tableau is undoubtedly the best visualization tool used by companies globally. In this article, I will showcase some of the best visualization examples from across the web created with Tableau Public. Save the Big Cats. Tableau Public Gallery Redirect Tableau Public.

Tableau Public is available for anyone to download and learn the basics of Tableau. Most of the visualization capabilities are the same as the full version, but your file importing and saving options are limited. Your visualizations can only be published online and are accessible to anyone. Tableau Public is available on all Atlanta campus University Library computers.

Tableau for Students is available with a renewable one-year license for each year you are a student. You must provide your student information (institution, school email address, etc.). This version has the full saving and file importing capabilities of the professional version (Tableau Desktop).

Is Tableau available for Macs?

Yes. Tableau can be used on both Macs and PCs. Check out the technical specifications here.

Are there alternatives to Tableau?

Yes. There are dozens of other data visualization programs, including Microsoft Power BI, Qlik Sense, and TIBCO SpotFire, to name a few. Research Data Services does not currently offer support or training for these other programs.

Tableau Public is a great platform if you want to share your vizzes that use public data with the world. You can create visualizations in your browser or by using Tableau Desktop—either Professional Edition (paid) or Public Edition (free)—then publishing your work to the Tableau Public platform.

Here are a few ways Tableau Public differs from other Tableau products.

With Tableau Public, you can:

  • Access free authoring tools for analyzing public data.
  • Publish your work on a free, open visualization platform for all the world to see.
  • See others' visualizations and immediately explore or download them to learn from them and see how they are made.

Other differences include:

Thousands of people and organizations around the world create and share data visualizations on Tableau Public. This global community is there to help you learn. Pick up new tricks by participating in fun, community-led challenges such as Iron Viz and Makeover Monday. Get answers to specific questions in the community forum. Or be inspired by the amazing work people are doing all over the world.

Be sure to look at the Tableau Public gallery to see some of the visualizations people in the Tableau Community have been creating.
